Pengalaman #3 English for Adult Class

 English for Occupational Purposes

Being a teacher of English is my passion.I graduated from English department and I have lots of experiences teaching children, teenagers and adults. There are lots of memories and experiences meeting different people and characters. I also get reel training to organize my emotion and manage the class while delivering a lesson. I have already got thousand hours of class meeting including the online class. There is onething I remember when I firstly taught English at adult class long time ago. 

As a new comer as a amateer tacher, I was to accept any classes to teach. No matter how hard I was preparing for the material. I had to prepare any other supported aids such as pictures or realia to help the learner understand what i was talking about. One thing I had to kep in mind when my boss informed me that I had to speak up in English all the time. If the learners did not get what I meant then I had to find other simple sentences to say including the gestures, facial expressions and body language. Moreover, the boss will sit in the class watching me teaching and would give his evaluation to decide whether I deserved the teach at that class ornot.

I knew that I was newbie with adult people. They were employees of a hospital. They came from different professions such as nurses, administration staff, security team, financial staff and hospital managers. The class is a conversation class that cover hospital work such as how to greet visitors, clients, colleagues or management staff. I was glad that my first coming topic is about introduction, how to introduce themselves formally and informally and how to introduce others in front of their team. 

I did my teaching by greeting, did simple ice breaking, asked what their names wereand stated the topic of that day. As I loved doing my teaching using the whiteboard so it would my playground to write, explain or to draw something. I write a word or sentences in big size so everybody could see them clearly. Everytime, they looked puzzled then I would write, say it aloud and invited them to listen and repeat after me. It went smoothly as I stood up while presenting the topic and I ignored my boss who was watching me at the back. I applied classroom language over and over again as well as my gestures to avoid translating the expressions.

I showed a model dialog before each pair practicing based on their own identity. I introduced some useful expressions, repeated them and point one or two learners to practice each other. I did also the simulation by asking some volunteers to come to the front class to see their self confidence and fluency. I put aside their mistakes on grammar or pronunciation. I would share the language evaluation before closing the class.

I sighed and felt relieved as my class ran well. Though some of them were shy, some others are good but overall the class knew and understood how to introduce themselves and others in simple ways. I closed the class by reviewing the lesson. Asking what they hd got and shared some language evaluation without mentioning their names.  

Onething I thanked to Allah as my boss showed his appreciation on my treaching style. He gave me some input on teaching especially on how to deliver the topic but he also appreciated on my activity with the board. I told him, The board was magic, sir. I could do anything in my teaching class. He handed me the class and I got the golden opportunity to have the adult class and become their facilitator for EOP.
